Privacy
Your files and positions stay on your device unless you choose to send them somewhere. The site counts visits anonymously, without cookies. This page lists everything else.
Last updated: October 7, 2026. AnkiGammon is a free, open-source project run by one volunteer developer. Questions or requests: contact@ankigammon.com.
What stays on your device
- Files you open in the web app and the tools (XG to MAT, Position Editor, MET calculator) are read inside your browser and never uploaded to this site.
- The trainer keeps your decks, positions and review history in your browser's storage, plus an offline copy of the trainer itself. Backups are files you save yourself.
- Settings: the web app's card options and the Position Editor's display choices are saved in your browser. If you connect HedgeHog in the web app, its sign-in tokens are saved there too, until you disconnect.
- Deck votes: the Community Decks page saves a random voter ID and your votes in your browser.
This site sets no cookies. Clearing your browser's site data removes everything above.
Usage statistics
The site uses PostHog (servers in the US) in cookieless mode to count visits and feature use. Your browser sends this data to t.ankigammon.com, an address PostHog operates for the site, which passes it on to PostHog. It receives the page you visited (without anything after ? or #), the referring page, your browser, operating system, device type and screen size, and named events such as "a match file was loaded, 12 positions" or "a deck was downloaded". Events carry counts and kinds only, never file contents, positions, deck names or player names.
PostHog tells visits apart with a hash of your IP address and browser that changes every day, so it cannot follow you from one day to the next. It does not store your IP address or look up your location. Statistics are kept for a year.
To opt out, turn on Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control in your browser: the site then sends nothing. You can also block t.ankigammon.com in a content blocker.
What you choose to send
- HedgeHog analysis (web app and desktop app, only after you connect a HedgeHog account): your browser or the app talks to hedgehog-bg.com directly. Positions are sent as position IDs. Analyzing a whole match uploads the match file, player names included, and saves it to your HedgeHog account. HedgeHog handles that data under its own privacy policy; ankigammon.com never sees it.
- Send to Anki and Study in Trainer only talk to programs on your own computer (AnkiConnect, and the desktop app). Nothing passes through this site.
- Submitting a community deck sends its title, author name, description, the deck file and a summary of its contents. Everything except the contact email is published once the deck is approved, including file and deck names inside the deck. The optional contact email is only used to reach you about the submission and is deleted once it is reviewed. A notice with the title, author and size goes to the developer's Discord for review.
- Voting on a deck stores your random voter ID, your vote, its time, and a salted hash of your IP address that limits votes from one network. The IP hash is cleared after 30 days. Download counts are totals only.
Services that see your IP address
Like any website, the services that deliver its pages see your IP address and browser in their logs:
- GitHub Pages hosts the site and logs visitors' IP addresses for security. The homepage also asks GitHub for the latest release.
- Cloudflare runs the community decks server, whose request logs are kept for a few days, and serves some scripts (cdnjs).
- jsDelivr and unpkg serve the web app's Python runtime and a few open-source scripts.
- Ko-fi, only if you click "Support me".
The desktop app
The desktop app has no analytics, no account and sends nothing to this site. At startup it asks GitHub whether a new version exists, at most every six hours; set "check_for_updates": false in ~/.ankigammon/config.json to stop it. HedgeHog works as described above.
Help → Send Diagnostic Logs only creates a ZIP file for you to send yourself. It contains your settings, logs with file paths and player names, and system details; open it to check before sending. Exported decks and study packs include the path of the file each position came from.
Your choices and rights
Write to contact@ankigammon.com to ask what is held about you, or to correct or delete it, such as a deck you submitted or your votes. You can also complain to your data protection authority. If this page changes, the date at the top changes with it.
